The Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exposition of 1889.
The construction is made of rigid metallic skeleton. The girders made of crosspieces brought an elegant solution to wind problems and resulted in an extremly light construction.
The tower was erected in spite of a wave of opposition but is now the most frequented of Paris' monuments.
