The cards depict great Kings of France in portraits from the French schools of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The suits correspond to historical figures. Kings ("R") feature Kings from Louis XIII to Louis XVI. Queens ("D") feature Kings' wives such as Marie Antoinette and Anne of Austria. Jacks ("V") feature famous ministers such as Richelieu and Necker. The ordinal cards feature important dates in French history.
The cards themselves have French markings.
"R" (for "Roi") is King.
"D" (for "Dame") is Queen.
"V" (for "Valet") is Jack.
"A" (for "As") is…Ace!
