The cards are based upon historical paintings of Napoleon belonging to the French national museums.
The Kings ("R") feature Napoleon at different times of his life. Queens ("D") feature Napoleon's wives and mother. Jacks ("V) feature important Generals such as Murat or Ney. Aces ("A") feature battlefields. The ordinal cards feature key dates in Napoleon's life (battle dates, administrative orders, etc).
The cards themselves have French markings.
"R" (for "Roi") is King.
"D" (for "Dame") is Queen.
"V" (for "Valet") is Jack.
"A" (for "As") is…Ace!
